The Elusive Progressive Aspect in the Minority Dialects in Albania: Inherited Structures and the Grammaticalization Paths
Abstract
This article presents new evidence regarding the influence of Albanian on the aspect systems of the genetically distant, yet typologically similar, minority dialects extant in stable bilingualism with Albanian for at least several generations. Due to the Albanian influence, several Balkan Slavic (Golloborda, Boboshtica), Balkan Romance (Frasheriot, Grabovan), and Balkan Romani (Bugurdži, Gurbet) dialects developed grammaticalized constructions to denote the progressive aspect. The analysis of diverse types of data (spontaneous versus non-spontaneous speech production) demonstrates the effects of language management that can cause this category to be particularly elusive.
