“They fought with the Turks, against their will, but it was not possible otherwise”: Observations on Serbian-Ottoman Collaboration between the Battle of Kosovo and the Fall of the Serbian Despotate (1389–1459)

Abstract

The article examines the relationship of Serbian elites to the Ottoman Empire after the Battle of Kosovo (1389) and attempts to demonstrate that the Serbian nobility was a decisive factor in the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans, especially at crucial moments such as the battles of Nicopolis (1396) and Ankara (1402) and the sieges of Thessalonike (1430) and Constantinople (1453). The analysis examines both the historical facts and the contemporary interpretation of the Serbian elite's reaction.
