Abstract

The first attestation of Albanian literature is the 1555 work of the priest Gjon Buzuku written in the Gheg variant. Though this work is traditionally labeled Missal, it is more than such. In fact, it is a compilation of mostly liturgical texts that were needed for spiritual welfare. To this day the question of which models Buzuku used for his translation has not been answered satisfactorily. At any rate, it is beyond doubt that Buzuku consulted Old Croatian translations in addition to the original Latin texts. In this article the influence of the Old Croatian texts is investigated by an examination of the All Saints’ Liturgy in Buzuku in comparison with some Old Croatian editions. The article makes an attempt to present the way the research for Buzuku’s models for his translation can be carried out in the future.
